IM Cooling Tower, Belgium

Situated in a small neighbourhood lies a huge Power station with an awesome cooling tower.

Originally built in 1921 this was one of the biggest coal burning power plants in Belgium.

Water would be let into the cooling tower and would be rapidly cooled by the wind swept in from portals at the base releasing hot air. The cooling tower was able to cool 480,000 gallons of water per minute.  by 1977 the power station was the main source of energy for the local town.

The plant later closed in 2007 after protests by Greenpeace because it was responsible for 10% of the carbon dioxide emissions in Belgium.
